Ice Block

As you can see from the date below, I’ve finally started into recent pictures.  Yeah, this is still one and a half weeks old, but a lot closer than the month old ones before.

This was actually a mistake that turned out quite well (I actually had a lot of those the day that I took this).  I had been doing some studio work and had the white balance set to tungsten, but this shot was taken outside.  As you can tell, the white balance of the shot has skewed the colors to a nice blue hue.  Unfortunately, I didn’t line this one up perfectly, and then didn’t do such a great crop job of it, since it’s a little crooked.  No matter what I would’ve done though, it would’ve come out this way because of the angle the shot was taken at.  I can definitely see myself revisiting the glass blocks with a tripod to get a better framed shot.

Wall Sconce

This is actually my wall sconce above my bed.  In fact, you too can get one by going to Crate and Barrel.  This image was initially taken for a depth of field assignment, but I really like the way it looks.  In fact I have many other ones that I took the same day.

Lakeside

In this one, I really should’ve used HDR again, because the water looks so murky and black which it totally isn’t.  In fact, I’ve never seen clearer water before, well, except for maybe in the Caribbean.

These are the types of photos that really bring back memories for me.  I still wouldn’t consider them snapshots, though.

Brooding Clouds

So it’s Friday the 13th, and I needed to throw up something a little more “scary” than what normally goes up here.  I don’t think this really fits that either, but it’s the best I could do, honest.

For those of you that visited the beta site at all, you’ll recognize this picture.  I have no idea why, but it was actually the image that I used when I was still in the testing phase of the site.  I’m not sure why it’s taken me so long to actually put it on the site, but here it is.

Oh, and this was taken while we were waiting for the 4th of July fireworks.  Needless to say there were a few people worried we may get a little wet.

Pink Flower

Honestly, I have no idea what exactly this is a picture of, other than some type of flower.  However, I really like the small focus plane, and how the subject is subtly set apart from the background, not only in a slight color differentiation, but also the proportions.  Have I mentioned that I really need to get a macro lens to explore this more and properly?

Dusk

Enjoying the sunset over Lake Leelanau.  Talk about a great time to go water skiing, just look at how flat the water is.  Looking back, I really should’ve tried to compose this picture using HDR.  Oh well, maybe next time.

Bull

I’m not sure what it was, but in my first photo class there seems to be a theme around this bull.  I guess it all started when Joel and I decided to utilize the bull statue for our motion assignment.  I wish my pictures of him had turned out better, but sadly they were all out of focus (at least he was), and so they won’t be making it up here.  I believe every week, minus the weeks we had to take pictures of a person, the bull was the subject of at least one image.

The bull, on the corner of Michigan Ave and Washington St.

Serene

Every time I look at this picture I wish I was there again.  There are so many fond memories of my grandparent’s house up North.  It makes me want to kick off my shoes, put on a sweatshirt and jeans, and just walk around barefoot with a slight dew on the ground.  Granted, I don’t believe the weather was like that when I was up there and took the picture.

Man am I a sucker for the rich greens and blues.

Tunnels of Light

Along the I&M Canal, there once stood a massive steel mill in Joliet.  Now, there is little that remains but the overgrown ruins.  Near one of the old blast furnaces there’s two tunnels under an inclined ramp.  This is one of the areas that the weeds seem to prosper because of the smaller amounts of soil contamination.

I was disappointed that I was only able to get a few good images here.  The neutral colors and lack of good light wreaked havoc on my camera as all the images lacked any depth or feeling.  This was about the only one, and it works because of the light play on both the new and old.

Blossoms

These blossoms remind me of what spring is all about.  In fact, this picture was actually taken this spring on many a walks that Erin and I made down to Lake Michigan.  The city has really done a lot to make that are as enjoyable as ever.  From the lake train that runs 18 miles along the river to the number of parks to the cleanliness of everything.

It’s nice to see images such as this after the cold, windy winter we always seem to have.
